LEBANON, Ohio (WSPD) -- There's a buckeye shortage in Ohio.

Miami Valley Gaming, a racino in Lebanon, has been handing out lucky buckeyes since opening in December.

"We started thinking we'll get 10,000 buckeyes and we'll have them for display and it will be kind of neat to have on display in our players club. Those 10,000 lasted only a week," said Jeff Nelson, spokesman for the racino.

He estimates they've handed out more than 40,000 buckeyes and only have about 500 to 1,000 left. Once they're gone they're gone.

"Not only are we running short we've run the state short a little bit," he said.

Nelson says they've been scrambling to find suppliers that can meet the demand. Luckily, it's just a temporary problem. More buckeyes should be available in the fall.

In addition to being good luck charms at the racino, Ohio State fans use buckeyes to make necklaces and other items to show support for their team. Nelson jokes that the price of buckeyes may be higher because of them.

"I think our next step is to go out to the trees and start picking them," he said.

One of their most popular promotions is a drawing for a golden buckeye valued at $5,000. Nelson figured most people would take the cash instead of the buckeye, but he says that's not been the case.

"A buckeye in your pocket is lucky and we've just been reinforcing that," he said.
