Zika-Type Mosquito Found In Toledo

(Toledo, OH) A search is underway in Lucas County for more evidence of a Zika virus-carrying mosquito.

Toledo Area Sanitary District officials say the Asian Tiger mosquito was found last week in the area of Dorr Street and Westwood Avenue near the University of Toledo campus. UT students begin returning for the fall semester this weekend.

There's no evidence yet that the bugs are carrying the virus, but residents are urged to eliminate areas of standing water where the mosquitoes breed.  Sanitary district workers are canvassing the city for more breeding areas.

This is the first time that species of mosquito has been identified here in all life stages-- and is only one of two types of mosquito capable of transmitting Zika virus.
