Tuesday night's "Hand in Hand: A Benefit for Hurricane Harvey Relief" telethon brought together stars from around the world asking to help those affected, raising more than $44 million as of this morning.
The hour-long special included performances and messages from celebrities Beyoncé, Justin Bieber, George Clooney, Cher, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jamie Foxx asking viewers to donate to help with relief from the disastrous storms. Estimates from various groups have said that both hurricanes caused between $150 billion and $290 billion in damage to Texas and Florida.More than 60 people died during Harvey and 12 deaths have been reported in the US from Irma.
Justin Bieber appeared at the “Hand In Hand” telethon last night to introduce a prayer.He said, "I’m super grateful to be part of this cause. We don’t want you guys to just watch, we want you guys to be a part of this and donate, whatever you can, it doesn’t have to be much just whatever you can possibly give."
After the prayer, Tori Kelly and Luis Fonsi did a cover of "Hallelujah".
Beyoncé delivered a plea to donors, saying, “During a time where it's impossible to watch the news without seeing violence or racism in this country, just when you think it couldn't possibly get worse, natural disasters take precious life, do massive damage and forever change lives, leaving behind contaminated water, flooded hospitals, schools and nursing homes.”
Beyoncé, a Houston native, talked about watching her city come together during a time of great strife.Beyoncé has been active in various efforts to assist Houston in the wake of Harvey. She reportedly made a large private donation to relief efforts and has also launched her own fundraising initiative.
Usher and Blake Shelton performed “Stand By Me” on the Grand Ole Opry stage last night.
