EPA Demands Review Of Lake Erie's Impaired Status

(Toledo, OH)    Northwest Ohio officials are applauding the U.S. EPA's decision to reevaluate its impaired waterway ruling for Lake Erie.

The feds told Ohio environmental officials this week their assessment of the water quality was incomplete and needs to be revisited.  There's also a federal court case pending, where an environmental group is asking a judge to declare the lake impaired.

Local leaders say the decision isn't a guarantee of an impairment designation and the cleanup funds that come with it, but it's an important step towards ending the toxic algae problems in the western basin.
