Pizza, Water Skiing on the NW Ohio Weekend Agenda

(Sylvania, OH) Pie of all kinds is the featured attraction the next two days at PizzaPalooza. 

12,000 people are expected to listen to tunes and sample pizza at Centennial Terrace, as local vendors and media personalities compete for the top prize of best pie-- and bragging rights for the next year. At least eight local pizza joints will compete for the coveted People's Choice award. Saturday evening also features a pizza-eating contest to see how fast participants can down two, twelve-inch cheese pizzas. 

Family-friendly activities and costumed characters also will dot the grounds of the annual Sylvania Chamber of Commerce event. Local favorites The Grape Smugglers, Distant Cousinz, and Skoobie Snacks are among the featued bands each evening.

The Ohio Water Ski championships are coming to Bowling Green this weekend. 

You might expect such a compeition on Lake Erie, but inland at BG? Bees and Skis Lake will be the site where 100 athletes of all ages from across Ohio today and tomorrow, competing in three events-- slalom, trick, and jump. 

In slalom, water skiiers must complete a six-buoy course while the boat keeps a straight path through the center of the course. To advance they either make another pass with a shorter rope or at a faster speed-- so the course only gets more difficult. The Barking Shores Ski Club is the host for the event. Competitors who win a state title advance to the Midwest Regional Championships in Wilmington, Illinois.

The Ohio Flags of Honor traveling memorial is setting up in Defiance this weekend. The display is meant to honor the men and women who gave their lives in Iraq, Afghanistan and the global War on Terror. The traveling memorial will be at the Elks Lodge in downtown Defiance on Saturday and Sunday.

One of the Toledo-Lucas County public library’s biggest fundraisers of the year is a complete sell-out. UP on the Roof takes place tomorrow night, where a buffet, dancing, and downtown Toledo’s night sky are part of the atmosphere. The rooftop party is a big draw among young downtown dwellers and long-time library supporters.

The Toledo Museum of Art displays a new exhibition this weekend. Sights and Sounds: Art, Nature, and the Senses begins tomorrow with a slate of programming scheduled through the end of February. The multi-sensory art exhibit features video, new media, and paper art—some of it installed for the first time and others only shown occasionally from the museum’s own collection

Christmas in July is the theme of this weekend’s installment of Music under the Stars at the Toledo Zoo. The Toledo Symphony Chamber Orchestra will play holiday tunes in the middle of summer, including traditional Christmas carols. The free community concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the Toledo Zoo amphitheater.

One Williams County community has beans and balloons on its menu of fun this weekend. The annual Bean Days and Balloon Festival takes place in Montpelier, where there’s a high school reunion this evening to kick off the festivities. Hot air balloons come to town to stage fly-overs and night glow events, with a variety of food, live music, and family-friendly activities through Sunday.
