Fairgoers To Name The Butter Cow at This Year's Ohio State Fair

Posted July 14th, 2014 @ 5:09pm by Matt Bruning

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSPD) -- For the first time in over 15 years, Ohio State Fair fans will have the chance to choose names for the 2014 iconic butter cow and calf at the Ohio State Fair. This year there will be a 21st Century twist.

The tradition began in the early 1980s. Fairgoers would drop hand-written entries into a large wooden milk carton. This year, entries can be submitted on Twitter using #ButterCowNameGame.

"With social media today we thought what a great way to bring back such a fun tradition," said Jenny Hubble with the American Dairy Association.

One of the early favorites was "LeButter James." Hubble expects a few entries related to the returning Cleveland Cavaliers star player.

"I'm sure we'll have lots of entries that maybe are inspired by LeBron," she said.

The winner will be invited to the butter sculpture unveiling the day before the fair opens. They'll also receive a prize pack that includes free tickets to the fair, vouchers for free ice cream and a t-shirt.

The exhibit draws more than 500,000 visitors each year.
